Summer Reading {Starting Little Ones Early} – Part 2

As we continue through the summer, our attention spans are getting a bit shorter. While Maddie still loves reading, and reading to her brother, she seems to be getting easily distracted. It hasn’t been as easy to grab a few books and start reading. We really need to sit down and make sure we have a designated reading time.

All that being said, this second set of books is not receiving as raving of a review as the first set. They were all good books but not as attention grabbing as the first. Maybe it is the fault of summertime antsy-ness. Maybe she is just bored with reading right now. Either way, here goes nothing!

HARRY THE DIRTY DOG (GENE ZION)

I actually remember this book from my childhood. Maddie wondered why the family dog didn’t have a collar on – I did too. Overall, it’s a pretty cute book and will definitely help that child that doesn’t like to take baths!

KNUFFLE BUNNY: A CAUTIONARY TALE (MO WILLEMS)

Combining illustrations with black and white photographs this well-designed book intrigued me for sure! It also felt very relatable for us. My son can’t sleep without his blankie and we would move heaven and earth to make sure we never lost it.

THE NAPPING HOUSE (AUDREY WOOD)

I’ve definitely discovered that our almost preschool aged girl does very well with books that repeat. This book has rhythm and repeats in a similar pattern. It reminds me a lot of The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.

HOW DO DINOSAURS SAY GOOD NIGHT? (JANE YOLEN)

The thing that caught Maddie’s attention the most in this book was not the changing dinosaurs but the fact that they each had a different mom (and that mom was not a dinosaur). Jack’s attention was even attracted to this book. Between the colorful photos and funny storyline, they were intrigued.

DON’T LET THE PIGEON DRIVE THE BUS! (MO WILLEMS)

A friend recommended this book long ago, so when it showed up on my daughter’s reading list, I was looking forward to reading it. The pictures are fun, the reading is easy to follow, and it’s perfect for a child learning sight words.

SCAREDY SQUIRREL: MAKES A FRIEND (MELANIE WATT)

Its cute, it’s silly, it’s full of bright and colorful pictures. It is perfect for grabbing the attention of my very distracted toddler. The book instelf is not a basic read; it requires more interaction between the reader and listener, which was fun for us.

FLOTSAM (DAVID WIESNER)

We have discovered that we have a hard time reading books that only rely on photos and do not have any words. We look at them and make our own story but then Maddie gets bored quickly. I think she would rather hear me tell the story and then attempt to repeat it or alter it herself than create it from scratch.
