Tips to Maintaining Your Home: Help
Being a proclaimed control freak, it is difficult for me to admit when I need help. I like things done a certain way. It wasn’t until I was working full-time, had two kids, and a husband with limited spare time from his company, that I realized I needed to accept help.
Here are a few people that this control freak relies on to maintain her house and her life:
Spouse. Let him/her do things even if they don’t do it exactly how you would. If it gets done and the house isn’t still a disaster, call it a win. The more your spouse has to do and be responsible for (without being told to do so, like a parent would), the more likely they will (hopefully) continue to help maintain the house.
Kid/s. They can help. Start assigning little chores early on (cleaning up their toys, putting their dirty clothes in the it hamper, etc.). As they get older, you can upgrade them to bigger tasks like folding laundry and setting the table. Sure, it may not be perfect, but they are learning to help maintain the house too. Utilizing an awesome chore chart, like the one we received in our Growing Roots box subscription, is perfect for little ones who are learning!
Family. When I would entertain or host parties, I would try and prepare everything. I wouldn’t want anyone to bring anything because I would want to impress everyone with my hostess skills. Well, that got extremely overwhelming and all-consuming. After realizing I should accept the help of family and their delicious dishes to pass, each birthday party, or any other party, was much more enjoyable for all involved.
Cleaning Service. If this is one thing you have to scrape together money for to afford it, do it. Even if it is just once a month. We have an awesome cleaning service, Mandee’s Cleaning Service, that is just fantastic. Amanda and her group have been cleaning our house for a little over a year and we couldn’t be happier. She’s affordable, easy to communicate with, and makes my life so much easier. Plus, at the end of the day, I’m spending more time with my family and less time worrying about cleaning.
Advice. Heed it. Here I am saying to follow my own mother’s advice… I can’t believe I’m admitting it. In written word. There are quite a few things I follow that my mom taught me regarding how I keep my house. Keep things minimal – less stuff, less dust. When entertaining, don’t worrying about cleaning a ton before they come over – make sure the bathrooms are clean but you’ll end up cleaning more after they leave. Let people help you. If you try to do everything yourself, you will burn out. You need to maintain balance.
